Orton-Gillingham

Orton-Gillingham is the Gold-Standard approach to teaching reading and writing skills that are specifically tailored for students who have difficulty learning to read. This method provides learners with the knowledge and strategies they need to become successful readers, spellers, and writers. The Orton-Gillingham approach is a reading method using direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling to students with dyslexia as these skills do not develop with the same automaticity that the regularly functioning reading brain does. The strength of Orton-Gillingham lies in its multi-sensory approach as it uses auditory, visual, kinesthetic and tactile elements such as gestures and repetition to engage students while they learn fundamental literacy skills.

The Science of Reading combines research findings from psychology, linguistics, education, neuroscience, and other fields to better understand how humans learn to read. This research informs educators as they teach children critical foundational literacy skills, such as phonemic awareness or spelling. With this research informing teaching methods and practices, students have opportunities to build higher order thinking skills with confidence in their literacy development through the Orton Gillingham approach.

Phonograms, which are essential components of language, provide a valuable tool for developing reading and writing abilities. Proficiency in phonograms improves reading, spelling, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, fostering confidence in reading. While learning phonograms may pose challenges due to irregular patterns or difficulties blending sounds, effective strategies and practice can help students overcome these obstacles and gain a thorough understanding of phonograms, ultimately enhancing their literacy skills.

Phonograms are combinations of letters that represent one specific sound, like /ar/, /eigh/, and /sh/. They serve as a connection between the sounds of spoken language and the symbols in written language. Phonograms play a vital role in phonics instruction, where students learn how letter sounds relate to specific letters or combinations of letters. Through phonogram practice, students strengthen their ability to recognize and decode sounds, ultimately improving their reading and spelling proficiency.

The Orton Gillingham approach has been recognized by the Science of Reading community as the Gold-Standard in reading instruction. Mind Discovery specializes in the Orton-Gillingham approach follows the Science of Reading and emphasizes the importance of phonograms in decoding.

Curriculum Progression

  1. Fast ForWord – All students begin with cognitive and language development.
  2. Elephant Math – Once they graduate from Fast ForWord, students move into foundational math development.
  3. IXL(At home) Students begin using IXL only after completing both Fast ForWord and Elephant Math.(In Center) Students begin using IXL only after entering the Remediation phase.

Subject Placement & Remediation Use

Before starting IXL, each student takes in-center benchmark assessments in both Math and ELA to determine their strengths and areas for growth.

The lower-scoring subject is assigned for in-center IXL, but only if the student has entered the Remediation Stage.

The higher-scoring subject becomes their at-home IXL focus, but only once they have graduated from Elephant Math.

Example: A student in the Remediation Stage but still finishing Elephant Math will begin in-center IXL in their lower subject, but will not begin IXL at home until they graduate Elephant Math.

In Center IXL (Remediation Stage)

  • Students in the Remediation Stage begin practicing IXL in their lower-scoring subject, regardless of whether they’ve started IXL at home
  • This provides direct, hands-on support from teachers to build up weaker skills

At-Home IXL

  • Only once a student has fully completed Elephant Math can they begin IXL at home
  • Their at-home IXL will focus on their stronger subject, supporting continued growth and confidence
  • Students complete at-home IXL after their other daily assignments

RightEye

Enhancing Functional Vision for a Better Quality of Life

Studies show that the visual system is far more intricate and complex than many realize; it is a harmonized network of mechanisms spread across the brain coordinating basic skills like eye focusing, movement, perception and information processing to create successful visual processing. Your quality of life can be significantly impacted by your vision. The delicate balance between eye muscles and the brain forms your functional vision, so even a slight misalignment could have an unexpected effect on learning.

Despite the fact that 1 in 4 children experience a vision disorder, 50% go undiagnosed and untreated. However, many of these functional issues are correctable with a comprehensive eye exam and doing simple exercises – emphasizing how integral proper eye care is to overall well-being!

Achieving clear vision requires more than just good visual acuity. Despite conventional wisdom, having 20/20 eyesight does not necessarily guarantee healthy vision. The entire brain is responsible for successful visual processing. Without coordination between eye focusing, movements and perception functioning properly, individuals may be unaware of any underlying issues with their eyesight or overall visual performance.

RightEye’s EyeQ test has been cleared by the FDA and uncovers issues with your: Eye Alignment, Depth Perception, Object Tracking, Eye-Hand Coordination, Dynamic VisualFocusing, Visual Perception, Eye Movement, and Visual Integration.

Many students struggle with tracking, focusing, and processing visual information, leading to difficulties in reading, writing, and math. Mind Discovery has found a solution to help these students and the addition of RightEye EyeQ Trainer is an integral part of their process. Mind Discovery’s Method (EYES, EARS. BODY) has a profound impact on child development and the integration of ALL sensory systems crucial for strong brain development. This approach is especially beneficial for students with neurological disorders like ADHD, dyslexia, and visual processing disorder. We are so grateful to be using RightEye in conjunction with our program to make an impact in the lives of their students.

Discover Primitive Reflexes

An Unbalanced Neurological System

Recent emerging studies demonstrate that Primitive reflexes are essential to the development of higher-level skills in humans. They are usually present at birth and decline during the early period of infancy, resulting in a variety of states of body and mind. Although invisible to the untrained eye, these reflexes form the basis for development of functions such as learning, thinking, planning, and movement. In other words, primitive reflexes provide the necessary foundation that is required for complex voluntary movements and advanced functions like cognition. Therefore, by understanding how primitive reflexes impact these behaviors, it is possible to identify causes behind deficits as well as facilitate development toward gains in competency.

During the first year of life, each involuntary primitive reflex response gives way to a more voluntary movement (postural reflex), located in the right hemisphere of the brain. This reflex integration is part of the maturing of the central nervous system (CNS).

Primitive reflexes are automatic movements directed from the brainstem and require no cortical involvement (thought). They are needed for survival and development in the womb and in the early months of life. From very early on in utero, primitive reflex movements literally help develop the brain. The movements lay down patterns of neural networks and assist in myelination (connection) of pathways that allow the connection of various areas of the brain. These connections are so important later on for learning, behavior, communication, relationships and emotional well-being.

These primitive reflexes surface in utero and in infancy and become inhibited as the movements do their job and become more practiced and controlled. When a baby has been given the opportunity to develop freely and naturally, the primitive reflexes will integrate and no longer be active. When the primitive reflexes remain active, then many difficulties can emerge.

If the Primitive Reflexes are retained past the first year of life, they can interfere with social, academic, and motor learning. Children with learning disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum, and various other neurodevelopmental disorders are known to have retained primitive reflexes contributing to their symptoms and level of dysfunction.

Retention of primitive reflexes can be caused by a variety of factors. The birth process is a key factor in the integration of these reflexes; therefore, a traumatic birth experience or birth by C-section may lead to retained reflexes. Additional causes can include: falls, traumas, lack of tummy time, delayed or skipped milestones, chronic ear infections, chronic illness or head trauma.

The importance of reaching developmental milestones should not be underestimated. Each child progresses at their own rate, but achieving these milestones on time is vital. Failing to do so can be an early sign of potential challenges. Each milestone plays a crucial role in a child’s growth and establishes the groundwork for early brain development.

Primitive Reflexes are housed in our brain stem. When they are integrated they create the foundation of our nervous system. Integrated reflexes allow our brains to connect to our BODY, therefore we gain emotional control. Individuals with retained primitive reflexes are often in fight-or-flight, anxious, and emotionally reactive.

These are the most common symptoms we see in kids with retained reflexes. Any delay in milestones, can result in delays in development of motor skills, which drives integration of the senses and higher cognitive learning. If a student has trouble learning in school they often have an underdeveloped brain stem. The brain stem develops first through reflex integration, and lays the foundation for the prefrontal cortex, where we think, solve math problems, organize, and memorize.

Integrated Practice Protocol

The Integrated Practice Protocol Physical Program enhances students’ performance in various areas by effectively addressing the root causes of learning difficulties. This scientific program proves to be successful in improving physical, academic, social, and athletic performance.
The Integrated Practice Protocol (IPP) is a scientific approach to learning therapy that directly addresses the root causes of learning problems. IPP specifically examines the connection between a person’s physical abilities and the functioning of their left and right brain hemispheres, which directly impact the learning process. Recognizing the significance of physical abilities in facilitating effective learning, IPP emphasizes the importance of a solid physical foundation to support optimal intellectual development.

The IPP program identifies and trains the root causes of learning difficulties by targeting and enhancing various skills essential to the learning process. These skills include attention span, memory, comparison and contrast thinking, eye-hand coordination, and systems reasoning. By improving these skills, students are able to excel not only cognitively, but also academically, socially and in sports.
When a student is referred to the IPP program, they undergo a comprehensive assessment to determine the reasons behind their learning difficulties. This assessment covers cognitive abilities, sensorimotor functions, and focusing skills. Once the assessment is complete, the results are entered into a program that creates a personalized training plan for the student.
The training plan targets all areas that need improvement and includes a series of exercises focusing on vision and sensory integration. These exercises, such as balancing, crossing the midline, and vision training, are tailored to the individual’s specific deficits. This ensures that the time spent doing IPP exercises is highly effective.

Integrated Practice Protocol exercises are designed to help the physical system build a strong foundation for learning. It is important to note that optimal brain functioning begins with the body. Each student’s IPP training plan is individually created to target any areas of weakness identified in the initial assessment. Through a series of exercises, we aim to enhance sensorimotor skills, visual functions, and auditory processing abilities. As you progress through the IPP training program, you can expect to see improvements in various aspects such as behavior, body awareness, vision skills, and self-confidence, among others.

Some of the exercises included in the program are balance exercises, vision training, auditory processing training, eye tracking activities, posture and gait training, as well as motor skill activities. The primary focus of IPP training exercises is to improve the coordination between the left and right brain hemispheres, ensuring integration and efficient functioning of all cognitive processes.

Structure of Intellect

Mind Discovery’s mission is to make learning easier and more accessible for everyone. By utilizing our SOI program, we are able to improve low learning abilities and enhance strong ones. Our comprehensive range of tests and training materials covers grades pre-k to adult, allowing us to identify and address the root causes of learning difficulties.

The Structure Of Intellect (SOI) theory is a scientific approach to understanding human intelligence. It explores how individuals acquire, assimilate, and process information, which forms the foundation of human learning. Dr. Mary Meeker recognized the valuable application of this theory in diagnosing learning difficulties. Through her research, she discovered that specific intellectual abilities are closely connected to fundamental learning processes. Additionally, she found that these intellectual abilities can be developed and enhanced through education and training.

The close connection between assessment and training sets SOI apart. These assessments measure intellectual abilities, while the training materials strengthen weak abilities and boost strong ones, making SOI unique. SOI Systems is built on the belief that empowering individuals with the skills to learn confidently, accurately, and persistently is the key to success.

To address weaknesses and strengthen skills, the next crucial step involves engaging in remedial exercises. SOI provides a comprehensive range of modules for completion. Each module effectively transforms areas of low ability into areas of higher ability. In order to acquire a particular skill, multiple modules are typically required, often three. Some modules can be completed within the span of an hour, while others may demand several hours of dedicated work.

Individuals possess unique learning styles, and it is essential to cater to these preferences. The SOI method focuses on enhancing various cognitive abilities, including cognition, memory, evaluation, convergent production, and creativity, tailored to the individual’s dominant learning style. Through this approach, individuals will grasp the concepts effectively and efficiently.

Figural intelligence focuses on tangible information that can be directly perceived through sight, hearing, and touch. This type of intelligence primarily involves visual and spatial understanding, but can also encompass auditory and kinesthetic elements. Notably, young children often possess figural learning abilities.

Symbolic intelligence focuses on processing notational information. Unlike figural information that is tangible, symbolic information is abstract.

Semantic content refers to the understanding of concepts and ideas. It plays a crucial role in education, particularly in schools. Students who excel at processing and comprehending the conceptual content of language have a distinct advantage when it comes to learning. On the other hand, students who struggle with grasping these concepts are at a clear disadvantage.

The Structure of Intellect assessment offers a one-of-a-kind approach to identifying and addressing various challenges. This comprehensive tool not only determines the root problem but also provides tailored solutions for improvement. From general academic difficulties to memory skills, reading comprehension, anxiety, following instructions, focus, and behavioral issues, thismethod covers it all. With its ability to target multiple areas, it ensures comprehensive and effective improvement.
